Synopsis

I married a douchebag.

It’s my own fault, really. He came in like a handsome stranger and blew

me off my feet. I fell madly in love, like the naive girl I am.

Then he left me high and dry.

Turns out, I was nothing more than a business plan for billionaire

playboy, Marcus Tandem. He needed to be married to obtain his

grandfathers business, and I was the poor victim in his path. I thought

we had something real, I believed it was special until the truth reared

its ugly head.

I never meant anything to Marcus. Not a damned thing.

Five years on and my life has been a struggle. Left with nothing, I’ve

had to work myself into the ground to clean up my debts and take care of

my sick mother, as well as trying to divorce a man that refuses contact

with me.

Five years is a lot of time to plot the perfect revenge.

What my dear husband didn’t count on, is that fact that I was smarter

than I looked. After all, what married couple doesn’t take out a life

insurance policy? If he dies. I get five million dollars.

Of course, Marcus doesn’t know about it.

One drunken night just after I

left made sure of that.

My mother is unwell, she can’t pay for treatment. And I’m a bitter

woman. I’ve been the joke of Marcus Tandem for five years while I’ve

formed the perfect plan. Now it’s my turn.

I have to kill him.

Oh yes, Marcus will pay for what he did.

I made a vow before God, that I would be by his side ‘Til death do we

part.

I plan to keep that vow.

What she doesn’t know is that David is a one-woman man…and he’s madly in love with her. David’s determined to prove he’s worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea’s about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

Excerpt: Rock Courtship (Book 1.5) A Rock Kiss Novel

“Beer—whatever you have on tap,” David said to the grizzled bartender and grabbed a stool, his eye on the rugby game in progress on the TV screen bolted above the bar.

He’d hardly taken a sip of his beer, the dark liquid bitingly cold, when he felt a presence at his back. Instincts honed by a childhood in one of the toughest areas of New York had him focusing on the mirror behind the bar to check out the situation before he turned. A big, bald, and heavily muscled male with a spiderweb tattoo on his neck was standing behind and just to the side of David, a smirk on his pockmarked face.

Belly heating, David turned with a slight smile. “Problem?”

The bald man bared his teeth and, laughing, looked to a table to his right. “Hear that, boys?” he called out to his friends. “The pussy rock star here wants to know if there’s a problem.”

Laughter and shouts from that particular table, while the rest of the men in the bar went quiet. David didn’t move, taking a measure of the players without letting it show. “Always know your opponent” had been one of the first things his father had taught him—Vicente Rivera didn’t believe in turning the other cheek; he believed in teaching his sons how to put bullies on the ground and keep them there.

“Yeah, there’s a problem,” the bald guy said, shoving at David’s shoulder. “This is a real bar for real men. Not pussies.”

Like that, then. Good. He was in the mood to do some violence. Lifting his beer, David took a long drink, then slammed it down… and punched Bald Head in the jaw at the same time that he kicked out with his foot to connect with the other man’s knee. The jackass went down like a ton of bricks.

Roaring in rage, the man’s friends came at David.

He grinned and started to show them what this “pussy rock star” could do.

It wasn’t until they’d broken a table and several chairs, and the bartender had called the cops that David realized Thea would have to deal with the fallout from this. Fuck, fuck, fuck, he thought as he was shoved into a cell alone, his erstwhile opponents in the cell opposite. Sliding down the graffiti-marked wall to the floor, he thought about the phone call the desk sergeant had said he could make and decided against it.

Fox had Molly with him—the band’s lead singer had been waiting for his girl to arrive since the instant Schoolboy Choir set foot in the city. As for Noah and Abe, they both had their own plans. He knew any one of the three men would drop those plans in an instant to come to his aid, but since the cops had made it clear he’d be spending the night in a cell no matter what, why mess up their plans?

“You do or say anything that’ll hit the media, you call me. Day or night. I hate surprises—so don’t you dare surprise me.”

Thea had given that order to all four of them when she’d agreed to act as their publicist. Her up-front nature and dedication to her job was part of the reason they’d hired her; Thea was the best and she didn’t take any shit from her clients. He wasn’t doing himself any favors by not calling her.

Right then, David couldn’t find it in himself to care. It wasn’t as if she could hurt him any more than she already had. And Jesus, how long was he going to carry this torch that was burning him alive? “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he said aloud, banging the back of his head against the wall.

EXCERPT

Halloween night, while everyone was dressing up and attending

parties, Cy and I were in the basement, punching numbers. The Fitz was one of

the oldest buildings on campus, and it struggled to keep itself comfortably

heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. The basement was particularly

miserable and felt like an icebox on very cold nights.

I sipped my water and pulled the sleeves of my sweater further

down my hands.

Cy cleared his throat and, for the first time in weeks, spoke to

me first. “I can talk to Dr. Zorba about a space heater.”

“He’ll never go for it,” I said, putting down my water and wiping

my lips with the cuff of my sweater. “He wouldn’t risk a fire or a significant

temperature change affecting the specimen.”

“It won’t affect the specimen. It came from space.”

“Exactly. Where it’s cold.”

“Who says the planet it originated from wasn’t able to retain

higher temperatures?”

“Like Venus?”

“Exactly like Venus. I mean . . . I’m sure that it’s possible.

I’ll look into a space heater.” I watched him expectantly. “What?”

“No Uranus jokes? I’m disappointed.”

“What do you mean?”

I chuckled. “Never mind.” My fingers began clicking against the

keyboard again, and I was sure that I’d caught Cy staring at me from the corner

of my eye. I glanced over at him. “What?”

“You’re much more attractive when you smile. And your laugh is

lovely.”

“Uh . . . thank you.”

“You’re—”

“I’m welcome. It’s okay. I say thank you to you a lot,

apparently.”

“I just want you to . . . I don’t know what I want.”

He stared at me for a few moments more then continued with his

work. My face caught fire as the blood pooled under my cheeks. My fingers

wouldn’t work after that, and I couldn’t concentrate on the numbers.

Cy stood up and left the room without a word. Right about the

time I’d decided to get up and look for him, he returned, setting a

Butterfinger on my desk.

“Trick or treat, right?” he said.

“Is that a Halloween joke? I mean that’s cool. I just didn’t know

you had a sense of humor.”

“I’m surprised you’re here. There are costume parties all over

campus.”

I shook my head. “I don’t really do parties. Just once in a while

when I’m bored out of my mind, but I avoid Halloween parties at all costs.”

“Why is that?”

“Fake blood. Dead people. Slutty costumes. None of it screams fun to me.”

Cy grinned. “I suppose not. We still have an hour or so of work

to do. Would you mind if I walk you home when we’re finished?”

“Why?”

My response took Cy off guard. He blinked a few times and then

cleared his throat. “I think that maybe my insistence not to form attachments

here was incorrect. We spend a lot of time together down here, and I’d like to

get to know you better.”

“So that’s why you’ve been ignoring me? Because you know you’re

leaving?”

He hesitated. “In part, yes.”

“What’s the other part?”

He squirmed in his chair. “You . . . intrigue me.”

I wanted to high-five myself. The few times we’d interacted

before I thought he was being nice in spite of feeling an extreme loathing

towards me. Instead, it was the opposite. To Cy, I was intriguing. I shrugged, trying to pretend I wasn’t irrationally pleased.

“If you want.”

He smiled then continued with his work. Despite the difficulty I

had focusing, I forced myself to get through the pages of data on my desk. My

mind kept wandering off, questioning why I felt so drawn to him. Cy wasn’t my

type. He was leaving. His lack of concert T’s told me that we likely had

nothing in common. But even then, I had a strong feeling that there was a

reason life had thrown us together.

“Holy shit,” she breathed

when she looked at the four women standing in front of her. Courtney wasn’t

kidding when she’d said Philip collected lookalikes. All of them looked like

Amara. Not identical, but enough that a person who didn’t know her could confuse

them or think they were sisters. They all had dark, straight hair that reached

their elbows, a couple had layers like hers, and the others were cut the same

length. Their bodies were all thin like Amara, although with slight variation

in the hip area.

“You must be Amara,” one of

them said, speaking up.

“I am,” she said, uneasily.

“Isn’t it against code to use real names?”

The girl laughed. “What am I

supposed to call you? Jasmine?”

“Yes,” she responded slowly.

“Okay, Jasmine, I’m

Jasmine.”

Amara’s brows furrowed. “For

real?”

“All of our Méchant names

are Jasmine for the night.”

“What?”

The girl shrugged. “That’s

what they told us. We’re all wearing the same thing; we’re all standing the

same way, and using the same make-up.”

“But how will… Okay,” Amara

said, blinking rapidly. She reminded herself she had this one last thing to do

before she was free.

They all dressed in threads

of fabric, artfully shredded, tiny black shirts that left little to the

imagination and similar skirts, barely covering the panties beneath. Before

long, Vivienne appeared at the door, much to Amara’s surprise.

“It’s been a long time,”

Vivienne said with a smile when she spotted Amara.

Amara nodded in response,

still gaping at her.  She noticed  pairs of handcuffs that Vivienne held

in her hands.

“Okay, girls, stand in a

single line so I can put these on you. Don’t look so scared, Ava, they come off

after the auction,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I’m also going to put masks on

you,” she added. “Just a final touch so you can look more…alike.”

As Vivienne fastened the

handcuffs on each girl, she put a key on the side of their panties and gave

them a level stare. “For after.” She continued to give her unwanted comments as

she stood in front of each girl. Sometimes, “where did they find you?” others

“your hips are too big.” Nobody responded to her ”they just let her talk, cuff

and slip the black, demure masks over their faces.

“Ready,” she chimed before

walking out of the room. “Follow me!” she called over her shoulder.

The women followed Vivienne

to a stage where they lined up in a row

beside one another, their shaky arms rubbing against the other’s as they

looked into the crowd. A few scattered women accompanied some of the men. They

watched with equal attention and excitement. The look on their faces sickened

Amara.

“This is crazy,” she heard

Ava whisper beside her.

“It’ll be over soon,” Amara

whispered back.

Her eyes scanned the crowd

again.  The lighting in the room

was dim, like everywhere else, and it gave everyone in the crowd a rosy glow.

Amara wondered where the man was—the one looking for her—and that’s when she

spotted Colin sitting off to the left side, by himself with a drink in his

hand.  Shit. Amara cursed

repeatedly. She tried to see if she could spot Sam or Philip, but couldn’t. She

needed to tell somebody about him. If he decided to bid on her, if he could

even bid on the right her, it would

throw everything off.

Before she could do anything else, the auction started. Ava was

pushed up first. She stood in front of the line with her head tucked into her

chest, just waiting, as Vivienne introduced her as “Number One.” So they would

do it by numbers. Nothing more was said about Ava, before a woman stood up and

placed her bid of five thousand dollars, only to be countered by the woman at

her same table with a bid of twelve thousand. They both laughed, as if it was

such a hilarious thing to be bidding on this poor girl’s body. They gave each

other a knowing look, which made Amara’s stomach turn. Ava knew what she was in

for, though. The girls in Méchant were prepared to give their bodies away

without hesitation.

Three more numbers went by before it was Amara’s turn: Number Five.

She stood, with head held down as the others had, until she heard Colin’s

opening bid of fourteen thousand dollars. Her eyes snapped up to meet his. She

wanted to warn him to stop. A man standing off to the other side of the room

countered him. Twenty thousand. Colin raised it to thirty. Her hands sweated,

shaking so hard she was forced to clamp them together in front of her body as

her eyes searched the room for Philip, Vivienne…anybody who could help. The man

raised his bid to forty and Colin countered with fifty. Amara waited on bated

breath and sighed in relief when the man didn’t counter the offer. She should

have been nervous knowing Philip would be furious if that was the guy they’d

been waiting for, but a part of her was relieved. Vivienne said that standard

procedure was for them to check who the winning bidders were before they left

with the girls —that’s how they would know if the man was there. Maybe if he

bid on one of the others and was caught, Amara wouldn’t have to do much

more.

The longer she counted the numerous ways this could go, the more

tied up she felt. The cuffs around her hands began to be weighty, and the mask

on her face felt like it was suffocating her. Amara had to squash  an overpowering need  to get out, to run and never look back.

Auction over, each girl stepped off the stage and stood beside their

She met his gaze openly, brokenly, until he finally dropped his hand.
