blurb

We all have secrets.

Secrets well buried.

Until we find the one soul who makes the burden of such secrets just that little bit easier to bear.

Lexington “Lexi” Hart is a senior at the University of Alabama. Surrounded by her best friends, her loving family and having fulfilled her life-long dream of making the Crimson Tide cheer squad, everything is going exactly as she always dreamed it would. But beneath her happy exterior, demons lurk, threatening to jeopardize everything Lexi has worked to achieve. When events in her life become too much to cope with, Lexi finds herself spiraling down into the realm of her biggest fear. Lexi falls hard, victim once again to the only thing that can destroy her and, on the way, finds herself falling straight into the dangerous tattooed arms of a guy from the wrong side of the tracks.

Austin Carillo, starting Wide Receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide, must get picked in this year’s NFL draft. He needs it. His brothers need it. Most importantly, his mother desperately needs it. Brought up in a world where the poor are forgotten, the sick are left to fend for themselves and no hero miraculously appears to pull you out of hell, Austin had no other choice but to make a living on the wrong side of the law—until football offered Austin the break to get his life back on track. But when a family tragedy drags him back into the clutches of the gang he believed he had left far behind, Austin finds himself falling. Falling back into criminal ways and falling deep into a suffocating darkness. Until a troubled yet kindred spirit stumbles across his path, where Austin quickly finds he is falling for a young woman, a young woman who might just have the power to save him from his worst enemy: himself.

Can two troubled souls find a lasting peace together? Or will they finally succumb to the demons threatening to destroy them?

Synopsis1
I’ve always let my past dictate my future, letting it paint a picture of exactly what I don’t want to be. Where I don’t want to end up.
Drake Chambers is as arrogant as I am stubborn. A college quarterback, a national star. I thought he was just another one of those guys … the type every girl should stay away from, but he’s carrying more than the weight of the football team on his shoulders.
He unravels the feelings and beliefs I’ve held onto for so long.
I thought we had it all figured out. Two people who’d finally found their happily ever after, but the past always has a way of sneaking into the present.
With one decision, everything changes … forever.

♥ Here’s a few thoughts on Drake and Emery from Lisa DeJong ♥

Lisa’a take on the leading man:

Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m just as obsessed about football as I am about books. I’ve always wanted to write a book around football because I think I know my stuff. Anyway, Drake had to be the quarterback, because for me, that’s the most exciting position. I mean, everyone’s heard of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, right? I actually envisioned Drake as a young Tom Brady. Did I mention I’m a bit obsessed with him?

Like Emery, Drake has some stuff in his past. The only difference is, he hasn’t let it go. He carries it around on his shoulder because of the repercussions it had on his family … still has on his family. He’d do anything for the people he loves, but he hasn’t let himself love many. He’s stubborn and a little arrogant. He fights with himself more than anyone else so when he develops feelings for Emery, he doesn’t give in.

I absolutely love this guy – his vulnerability, his internal war. He even fought with me a few times, but I think I won. J

Lisa’s take on the leading lady:

It was funny because I found my Emery on my photographer’s page one day. Her name is Jenessa Andrea (https://www.facebook.com/jenessaCEandrea), and the second I saw her, I knew she was my Emery.

Out of all the female characters I’ve written about, Emery is the most like me. I was – okay, maybe I still am – a do-gooder. The thing about Emery is no matter what she does, she’s going to give her best effort. She doesn’t like when obstacles stand in her way, but when they do she finds a way around them.

She felt like she lost out on a lot during her childhood, which fuels her to want to be the best. It’s what she can control. She’s not immune to a hot guy who can match her jab for jab, though. She might fight it for a little while, tell herself he’s just another pig-headed athlete, but her walls aren’t that hard to tear down.

Emery doesn’t attach herself to many people, and when she does, it’s with super glue. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but when it all goes downhill, things get really bad.

review 1

First of all I need to state what a HUGE Lisa DeJong fan I am. I have followed her since her blogging days and immediately purchase whatever she writes.  I loved Plastic Hearts and Glass Hearts BUT I became obsessed with When it Rains.  That book made me ugly cry so bad that I physically could not read anymore at spots.  My glasses were fogged and I was a snotty mess.  With that being said, when the opportunity arose to review Changing Forever, I couldn’t jump fast enough.  I love it when a series focuses on different main characters while still giving you glimpses into the other characters you have fallen in love with.  While this is Drake and Emery’s story we still get to see Kate and Beau.  Drake and Emery have a beautiful story and the book was so well written and told in my favorite dual POV.  Lisa has a way of transporting you into the book and feel everything the characters are feeling.  I laughed, I cried (not ugly cry, but cry still the same) and I was totally gutted and the lifted up all in the same book.  The witty banter between Drake and Emery had me rolling at times but then the bull headed stubbornness had me wanting to reach in my kindle and throttle the both of them.  I loved the angsty roller coaster that I was on.  All in all this was a fantastic book and I cant wait until the next one.  I have a feeling that I may be up for an ugly cry all over again.

Excerpt

Finally he pulls away and looks at me again. His eyes are a little watery, like he’s been crying. “Run away with me.” There’s desperation in his eyes, a silent plea.

I bite down on my lip. “What?”

He sits up and traps my face between his hands. “Run away with me, Lolita. We can start over and I’ll keep you safe. Please tell me you trust me enough to run away with me, like you said to me when we were fourteen. God I wish I would have just done it… Things would have been so different if I just done it back then.” He pulls me against him again, embracing me tightly.

I remember the day my mom died, right before I found her in my dad’s arms in the driveway, I’d suggested to Layton that we run away. I’d never liked the world I grew up in and leaving seemed like such a great idea—still does. I just wish I could permanently leave it all behind.

“Where would we go?” I ask with my face tucked against his chest where I can hear his heart thudding almost violently. I think about Dannie and Mary Lou and how I’m just going to disappear, leaving them to wonder what happened to me. Then there’s Nyjah. I don’t know whether he was with Reagan on blackmailing me or not, but I still wish I could say good-bye. I feel guilty about it, but know in my heart that I can’t go back to Glensdale. Maybe one day, if this all ever settles down. One day. I hope. I hope. I hope.

Layton swiftly slants back, looking flabbergasted. “You’re seriously considering it? After everything?”

“You know I’m crazy enough.” I try to make a joke but miss the mark badly—it’s been a long time. Not knowing what else to say, I shrug. “I have to run anyway. Might as well be with someone.” I give him the best smile I can summon, but there’s too much darkness in me at the moment to be happy.

He smiles back, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I know, but I want to make sure.”

I think I’m sure. The last thing I want to do is leave Layton when I just got him back. “Layton, can I ask you a question?”

He nods, this time with confidence. “You can ask me anything.”

About Nowhere But Here:

Nowhere But Here CoverA Chicago reporter in her mid-twenties unexpectedly finds love in Napa Valley when she’s assigned to spend a week with a famously reclusive genius.

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. From the outside, her life seems charmed. She has a handsome, long-term boyfriend and a budding journalism career at a popular Chicago newspaper. But in reality, her relationship is going nowhere, and she’s quickly losing motivation for what she once believed was her dream job. When her boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously, Kate loses all hope of finding love.

With no living family and few friends, Kate confides in her boss. Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, he gives Kate the opportunity to jumpstart her career. The assignment: to interview the famously reclusive R.J. Lawson, a wealthy tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as a Napa Valley vintner. The week takes an unexpected turn, however, when Lawson refuses to divulge any information. Desperate for a lead, Kate turns to Jamie, a vineyard hand who shows her the romance of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. But his connection to Lawson is ambiguous, and when Jamie disappears before the end of the week, Kate is left to investigate another story: the truth behind the man who stole her heart.
